The figures slips out the picture, they begins to live in the reality, it is interesting! I fascinated with "Yabunirami no Boukun(Squint tyrant):(La Bergere et le ramoneur)" that was the antecedent of "Ou to Tori(The King and the Bird):(Le Roi et L'oiseau)" in my school days. If I didn't see it, I wouldn't have thought that I intended to the Animation.

絵から人物が抜けだして現実を生きはじめる、面白い！学生時代、私はこの「王と鳥」の前身である「やぶにらみの暴君」という作品に夢中になった。もしこれを見なかったら、漫画映画の道に進むなどということは思いもしなかっただろう。

Refined color, Exquisite perspective and charm of mysterious spaces that was produced from them, Chain of fantastic idea, Excellent characterization, Severe verticality world, Peculiar humour. This movie far exceeded a preconceived idea at that time, and taught me the possibility of the animation movie in surprising novelty.

洗練された色彩と絶妙の遠近法、それが生み出す不思議な空間の魅力、奇想天外なアイディアの連鎖、人物の見事な性格描写、世界の強烈な垂直性、独特のユーモア。この映画は当時の既成観念をはるかに超えて、驚くべき斬新さでアニメーション映画の可能性を教えてくれた。

I have some reasons I was fascinated with it besides the wonderful expression. The amazing ideas and images were not a gag and not an eccentric idea. I noticed they had concealed the grim fact of the present-age history one by one in their back.

夢中になったのは、表現が素晴らしかったからだけではない。奇想天外なアイディアやイメージが、ただの奇想でもギャグでもなく、その裏に、現代史の重く冷厳な事実をひとつひとつ隠していることに気づいたからだ。

This isn't an old-fashioned expression of revolution fantasy of liberating from despotism and suppression. The miserable truth of "Human" and "History" of our experience in the 20th century was kept in the detail that seems to be contradiction or absurd. And, the author is warning us of the next generation to take care about "Trap" of this world. That's why, the author expressly revived "Yabunirami no Boukun" planned immediately after WWII as "Ou to Tori" in 1970's.

これは、単に独裁や抑圧からの解放をうたいあげるだけの古びた革命ファンタジーではない。一見矛盾や荒唐無稽に思える細部にこそ、じつは二十世紀が経験してきた「歴史」と「人間」の悲惨な真実が秘められている。そして作者は、次世代の私たちに、それをよくわきまえてこの世の「罠」に気をつけろ、と警告しているのだ。そうでなければ、どうして作者は第二次世界大戦直後に構想された「やぶにらみの暴君」を、わざわざ1970年代に「王と鳥」として蘇らせる必要があっただろう。

One of the Hero, the bird that should be symbol of freedom. If he was cought in a diremmma, he agitate lions by sophistry and make them uprise. When the uprising lions pass over the lower town, their people cheers "Cheers, the birds!". Weak we are expecting poetic justice and obedient impression, but it startled us and make to recall real austerity of politics. And we are told at the same time. Old woman who was looking at it from the window, she shook her head and said, "I didn't think that the birds were such fellows. ". She was seeing through the reality. Moreover, he easily treats all these with humorous touch.

主人公のひとり、自由の象徴であるべき鳥でさえ、窮地に陥ればライオンたちを詭弁で扇動して立ち上がらせることも辞さない。そして蜂起したライオンたちが下層市街を通過すると、人々は「鳥たち万歳！」と歓呼する。勧善懲悪による素直な感動を期待しているヤワな私たちは冷水を浴びせかけられて、政治のリアルな冷厳さを思い起こさずにはいない。しかし同時に私たちは知らされる。窓からそれを見ていた老女が、首を振り振り「鳥ってものがこんなものだとは思ってもいなかったよ」とその現実を見抜いていることも。しかもこれらをすべて軽々とユーモラスに扱う。

I was surprised that "The King and The Bird" after 30 years of the first release is that there is no change in basic idea except the last scene that show the strong message. Most of the excellent cuts in "Yabunirami no Boukun" were remained in "The King and the Bird". How sad it is that the warning that had originated before 1950 is still in use now.

強烈なメッセージを込めたラストシーンは別として、驚くべきは、三十年後の「王と鳥」でも基本的な思想に何一つ変更がないことだ。「やぶにらみの暴君」の優れたショットのほとんどが「王と鳥」にもそのまま残っている。1950年以前に発していた警告がいまなお通用するとは、なんと悲しいことだろう。

I see our modern styles that were egocentric solitarily spoilt in the King of the squint. I overlap the burned area by the air raid which I ran around to escape to ruins in a collapsing high-rise city by the robot. And, I ask you this meaning.

私は寄り目の王の中に、孤独で甘やかされた自己中心的な私たち現代人の似姿を見る。ロボットによって倒壊した高層都市の廃墟に、私自身逃げまどった空襲による一面の焼野原や、9.11の惨劇を重ね合わす。そしてその意味を問う。

"Verticality of the control structure" that the author's intuition of poet proclaimed becomes strong more and more now. It is no wonder that we suffer from the out of control robots whenever we in there are not conscious. It is us whom are crushed when the city collapses.

作者の詩人的直感が喝破した「支配構造の垂直性」がますます強まっている現在、そのどこかに組み込まれている私たちがその現実に無自覚でいれば、暴走ロボットにいつ見舞われても不思議はないし、都市的なるものが崩壊したときその下敷きになるのは私たち自身だ。

"The King and the Bird" is worth repeating reference for me at least. It is a foresightedly and extremely modern style.

少なくとも私にとって、「王と鳥」は、繰返し参照するに値する、先見的できわめて今日的な作品なのである。
