--Why do you make Gedo Senki now?

Originally, the book which Mr.Miyazaki read enthusiastically. I read it too with his influence. Before making Nausicaa(1984), we continued thinking that we would like to film it. It is different from other adventure and fantasy which fight with the enemy with power and magic. It was shocking in me that he fight with himself. In the point that it draw the trouble of oneself, if there is no "Gedo Senki", probably there was no Star Wars series.

--At that time, did not you try making into a film?

To tell the truth, we negotiated once. but, it did not go well. It seems that has offer from the various people. but, Le Guin did not do OK to any. If we were making "Gedo Senki" at that time, "Nausicaa" might not have been born. About three years ago, the message reached from Le Guin via Shimizu Masako who translated a Japanese version. It is said that Le Guin to see the work of Miyazaki, and she want him to make it into a film. Though it was heaven-sent for me. Miyazaki has worried.

--Why?

His head was full of the production of Howl's moving Castle(2004). Time had passed since the time that he had wanted to make it. He had worry "Can I make it, now.". But, I wanted to make it in the time today. I had read by chance before I talked with Shimizu. I thought Vol.3 was fit in the time today. I thought that we able to draw sense of real that had become weak.

The opinion that agrees with the tax increase has increased when the public opinion poll is seen. I do not understand politics of asking the people privatization of postal services and the constitutional revision is extolled well. It is that the statesmen does because. after all, it strangle our neck. I think "common people" with the sense of real was gone. This is sure to be connected with what Goro expresses in the work, I am stopping it now.

--Why did you select Goro for the director?

Suzuki : |
There is a problem of the future of Ghibli. Takahata Isao is 70 years old. Miyazaki Hayao will be 65 years old soon. Total of 135 years old every two people. if my age is added to this, it approaches 200 years old. If we goes this way, Ghibli ends. but, it is a company that started their movies wanting to be made. I also am obtaining the satisfaction. There are feelings thought to be "Already it isn't sufficient?" in my mind. There is still our responsibilities to a young person who belongs to the studio. However, Mr.miyazaki is a genius for the made movie, but he is not good at all in teaching. You understands at once if he is taken in the passenger's seat of the car and drives. Most people get neuroses because he cuts in everything.
Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving Castle, first, had decided that another person was director. After all, Mr. Miyazaki has become a director. I have seen such a scene several times as for the movie making. Of course, Miyazaki doesn't mean any harm. But, there is a person who doesn't actually become a duodenal ulcer either. Then I've just thought of Goro. It might go well if he places it among them.

--But, he doesn't have the production experience of animation.

I was not anxious about it. When he builds the Ghibli museum based on the image sketch of Mr.Miyazaki. He did not experience construction though he experienced landscape gardening. I think that everyone can draw the picture as long as they are possible to observe it neatly. When I was editing monthly "Animage", I had the editorial staffs editorial staffs who doesn't draw the picture usually draw their self-portrait for their editor's notes. At the first they said that it is impossible, and they began to observe their faces carefully, they were able to draw to the last minute perfectly. Moreover, there was power that they had drawn it hard. Mr.Goro often drawed someone's portrait at meeting. I thought that he who had the observation power was able to draw the picture.

--Did Mr.Goro have the interested for animation for a long time?

Suzuki : |
I do not understand it. Working near own father would have been unpleasant usually, but he might have had the interest in the father's work something. When he undertook the work of the Ghibli museum, I felt it.

--Why did you choose Mr.Goro at the Ghibli museum?

Suzuki : |
I had known him since he was the junior high school student. When meeting him after a long time in his grandfather's funeral, it was strangely impressive in me that when having met him after a long time in his grandfather's funeral, it was strangely impressive in me that he had talked to me, "I'm Goro". He clearly saw my eyes, and did not release the glance. I saw his face in my mind when we planned the museum. I said to Mr.Miyazaki, how about trying it with Mr.Goro? --How did Mr.Goro answer it?

When he started working, there were two things that I'm so glad. One, He completed the Ghibli museum and he splendidly accomplished even management. Another, He did not accept with determined when there was a vague part in the image that Mr.Miyazaki drew. I thought this to be a very reliable. I saw his power to put his idea into practice. I thought that he was able to be likely to do the work of the movie possibly. When the plan of "Gedo Senki" was presented. I asked him, "You will be not indifferent in the future of Ghibli if you think about the future of Ghibli museum. Do not you participate in the project?" He answered at once, "It is related to the museum. and so,". To start up the project, we gathered in this room with Mr.Goro and the few people. It is October, 2003.

Yes. Afterwards, when the content of the project had jelled to some extent, I spoke to Mr.Miyazaki so that we might start in the full scale preparation. "we wants to be related to the project with Mr.Goro as the adviser." Then, he strongly opposed it. Various opinions were in his participation when speaking to everyone in the studio. It was not long before, Who came whether to draw the picture? The problem who drew the picture came. We decided to drawing story boards in Mr.Goro going this way and that. While going this way and that, we decided to Mr.Goro draws story boards.
